My 3rd great grandmother wrote all her family's names and birthdays on this sliver of paper. A very special thank you to Mrs. Mary Nell Craig Hayes (dec) for this precious find!! She graciously allowed me to have this wonderful page written by my 3rd great grandmother Letty Mashburn sometime after 1855. It was found among some papers and photographs among the belongings
of our Aunt Letty Mashburn Marlow.
A letter from my 2nd great grandather, William Powell Mashburn to his daughter Letty Mashburn Marlow. A great find and a nice view of his personality and lifestyle- this is page 1
page 2 of William Powell's letter
William Powell Mashburn and his wife, Jane Virlinda Corbin
Cowee Baptist Church, Macon Co., NC (near Franklin), the unmarked, final resting place of my 3rd great Grandparents, Thomas b. 1805 d. 1880 and Letta Mashburn d. 1890. Cowee is the first documented Baptist church to which our family belonged. It was founded about the same time Thomas and Letta's family came to Macon Co. from Burke Co., NC in 1839 by the Rev. Humphrey Posey. This means that our family has Baptist Roots for over 180 years!
Philadelphia Baptist Church, Union Co., Ga near Blairsville. Final resting place of William Powell Mashburn b. 1834 and his wife, Jane Virlinda Corbin Mashburn. Some of his daughters are buried there as well. A couple of interesting facts: my 3rd great grandfather, Joseph Byers Parham, was a pastor there. Joseph Byers Parham was the great grandfather of Edna Burr Parham who married my grandfather Edgar William Mashburn. One of the pastors there was named Henry L. Carroll, and he was a Lieutenant in Union Army. Lt. Carroll signed off on Parham's Oath of Allegiance after the civil war.
Edna Burr Parham Mashburn d. 1953 and Edgar W. Mashburn, b. 1902 d. 1974
This is page 4 to the letter above... just realised I left it out. I love the closing line: "we remain yours as ever"
I wish someone out there could identify these people. The date on the back looks like 1901. I believe the girl on the back row far right is "Inda" Mashburn, William Powell and Jane Mashburn's youngest daughter. Her name is written on the back as you can see. She was described to my Grand Aunt Geneva Mashburn Skaug by her father as "one of the most beautiful girls he had ever seen." She married a George C. Long and died shortly after this photo was taken in the early 1900's (probably during childbirth) and I have not been able to find any of her descendants. Photo was taken in Young Cane Ga and appears to be a church group. The couple on the front row far right is my 2nd great grandparents, William Powell and Jane Corbin Mashburn. His hairline is exactly like the picture of Burgess Gaither Mashburn, Ineda's brother and my great grandfather.
Attica Baptist Church, near Athens, Ga was the Mashburn's home church when they moved down from Union Co., Ga around 1919. My grandparents, Edgar and Edna Mashburn are buried here along with several of my great grandparents and cousins.
The Mashburn's first home after B. G. moved the family to the Athens area. This home stands just a mile or two down the Jefferson River Rd.
